coaching explained
Coaching is an unbiased form of support in personal growth for professional people to get in the driver’s seat of their life and work and
- Make conscious choices and initiate the change(s) they want to create
- Be comfortable and in flow with the ‘mess’ of life
- Keep the balance they want in their lives
- Become fully aware of their impact in their world
- Built on sound psychological, physiological and spiritual principles
- Sees everyone as whole, resourceful and creative – not ‘in deficit’ – the coach has the questions; the client has the answers!
- Is forward-looking and uses the past only as an aid to move forward
- Freeing – allowing people to step up and out to their aspirations and potential.
- Does not seek answers to ‘why’, rather to what? How? When? Who? Where?
- NOT counselling, not therapy
what difference can coaching make?
Coaching gives clients:
- an objective sounding board which is judgement-free
- permission to be and do things differently – translating dreams to reality; recognizing and moving beyond fears
- greater awareness of mindsets, thought patterns and the ability to shift them
- clarity of purpose and mission in life and work.
- a better understanding of who they are and what it is they bring to the world
The impact of this is:
- better relationships
- improved performance
- increased self-confidence and self-esteem
- greater valuing of others and their contribution
- greater satisfaction in life and work.
the coaching relationship
Coaching is a shared or joint activity where there is no leader, no ‘telling how it should be done’. This means that:
- The relationship is designed between the coach and client – each taking equal responsibility for its creation – in service of the client’s agenda.
- It is the coach’s job to:
- Hold the client’s agenda – both the ‘big’ and the ‘little’ picture
- Engage with the client as needed along the journey
- Self-manage so that the focus is exclusively on the client during coaching sessions
- Listen through all the senses and use intuition, expertise and experience in service of the client. It is the client’s job to
- Be an equal partner in the coaching relationship
- Feel comfortable yet challenged by the coaching relationship
- Be prepared for each session
- Be responsible for own actions, outcomes and impact
